Ground-breaking work is the aim of an inspired collective of artists based in North East Scotland, and their new exhibition at Aberdeen Arts Centre will be their best yet. South Aberdeenshire Abstracts, SABAB, has invited some experienced friends from the art world to select their paintings to make a fine display for their latest show entitled Path to Abstraction. It will run from 2nd September to 26th, including this year’s North East Open Studios (NEOS) - no. 244 in the free brochure that’s out now.
SABAB members are all keen artists who work independently and join together to put on abstract exhibitions whenever possible. They find the support and friendship within the group very helpful and one of their discussion meetings triggered the title for the show: Path to Abstraction.
“We are all at different stages with regards to our abstract artwork,” says Jacky Niven, founder of SABAB and Chairperson. “Our works exhibit differing degrees of abstraction but there’s an ardour, a passion in all to excite and inspire the viewer.”
Asked what she finds most challenging about her artwork, Michi Clark, treasurer, said she used to worry about it being ‘good enough’ but now she’s free of that. “Everyone has such personal and eclectic views on art that it’s impossible to cater to that wish to please others.”
Likewise, “The most important thing is to keep experimenting, try different things,” says Angela Arnold, minutes secretary.

Art Show on the Path to Abstraction
The other group members are Gay Halley, Gregor Phillips, Kate Mackenzie, Pam Hamilton, Julia Macauley, Bern Ross, Janice Headrick, Pauline Newman.
The executive manager of Aberdeen Arts Centre, Paula Gibson, said, “NEOS is a hugely important part of the annual visual arts programme for the city and shire and we are delighted to provide our gallery space to SABAB for what I’m sure is going to be an inspiring exhibition. I am looking forward immensely to seeing the finished product. Our space is ideal for a group to exhibit as we have a large bright and airy gallery and a newly refurbished and fabulously lit corridor space”.
Path to Abstraction promises to be a landmark show from this flourishing group: well worth a visit.
