Pauline Newman BA (Hon’s Fine Art)
I was born in Liverpool and moved to Scotland in 1991. I always wanted to go to art school, but it was as a mature student that I finally realised my dream. Having specialized in printmaking, I graduated from Gray’s School of Art in 1997.
One of the things I loved most about printmaking was the construction involved in making the plate, especially collagraphs. I also enjoyed the layering that was involved in the printing process.
I am currently creating images with copper. I like to work the metal into different forms and textures. Copper, although a metal, is soft and malleable. However, once beaten it becomes hard again and can even split if over worked when hard. It needs to be heated to become soft again. Copper can be textured using etching or embossed a variety of tools.
The colour of copper changes over time, if left alone it will react with the air and naturally darken to a rich red brown. When heat is applied reds, greens and blues appear. It can also be brought to a shine with the application of polish.
I enjoy the fact that even after I have finished working on a piece it continues to change. I feel that it has a life of its own and is still evolving.
I have continued the layering and texturing that I find most fun with the making of paper and adding other organic materials.
I believe that we are made up of so many layers ourselves and many things are hidden. Things are not always what they seem. I like the idea of looking deeper into a situation and into the reasons why we do certain things.
The titles of the pieces come from music I find inspirational, and passages in books I have read that have appealed to me.
I often use symbols of hearts and spirals. The heart is commonly recognised as being a symbol of love. Spirals appear in different cultures as a symbol of healing. I see the spiral as the universe, unfolding.
Since leaving art school, amongst other things I have tutored for the Open College of the Arts as well as taught art classes and life drawing workshops for Community Education in Laurencekirk.
